  • Cancer: the leading cause of death in France

    Cancer is the leading cause of death in France. Each year, more than 400,000 new cases are diagnosed and nearly 160,000 people die from the disease. It is estimated that 1 in 3 people in France will be affected during their lifetime.
    Thanks to advances in research, more than 1 in 2 patients can now be cured, compared to 1 in 3 thirty years ago. In this fight, research remains our best hope to defeat cancer in a lasting and effective way.

  • Tax considerations

    As a public-interest institution, the Centre Léon Bérard is authorized to receive donations. Depending on your country of residence, your donation may be eligible for tax benefits in accordance with local regulations. We recommend checking with your local tax authorities for more information.

  • Accountability and transparency

    By supporting the Centre Léon Bérard, you are assured that your donations and legacies are used responsibly. Our accounts are audited annually by an independent auditor, and our activity reports are available at any time on our website or upon request.
    We are also committed to regularly informing you about how your donations are used and the projects made possible thanks to your support.

What are your donations used for?

  • 15% of the research budget

    Each year, donations to the Centre Léon Bérard represent approximately 15% of the total research budget across our institution. This essential financial support allows our teams to move faster and go further in the fight against cancer, staying at the forefront of innovation.
    In a context of declining public funding for research, public generosity is vital to help us continue our mission, develop new treatments, and continuously improve patient care.

  • Construction and development of research facilities

    Your donations help fund the construction and development of our research buildings.
    For example, our latest research facility, Cheney B, was partially fitted out thanks to public generosity. When it was inaugurated in 2014, this seven-story building was unfinished due to insufficient funding. Thanks to a dedicated fundraising campaign, €3 million were raised to complete the top three floors.

  • Acquisition of cutting-edge equipment

    Thanks to your support, the Centre Léon Bérard can invest in state-of-the-art research equipment.
    Recently, high-cost DNA sequencers have been added to our laboratories. These technologies allow researchers to analyze tumor DNA in both adult and pediatric patients, helping to identify abnormalities that may explain cancer development.
    This allows physicians to tailor treatments based on the genetic profile of each patient’s tumor.

  • Funding research positions

    With your donations, the Centre Léon Bérard funds around 35 research-related positions each year within its teams.
    These are often postdoctoral researchers who need to gain experience before securing permanent positions. By supporting these young researchers—typically for a period of three years—we strengthen our teams, prepare the next generation of scientists, and give research the means to move faster and further in the fight against cancer.

  • Improving patients’ quality of life

    Each year, part of the donations is dedicated to improving the quality of life of patients, both adults and children, treated at the Centre Léon Bérard.
    This support allows us to offer services free of charge, such as socio-aesthetic care, podiatry services, and cultural workshops through the “Art in Hospital” program (music, photography, fashion, etc.). It also helps provide Christmas gifts to every hospitalized child.
    In 2023, donations also contributed to the continued development of the “Maison Léon Bérard,” located just 600 meters from the hospital, one of the very first hospital hotels in France.
