I wish to make a donation to research

  • I wish to make a donation to research

Donations made to the Centre Léon Bérard represent a boost to cancer research. You can opt to make a one-off donation or set up a standing order with the amount and frequency of your choice.

    Make a donation
  • Organize a collection

Every year, hundreds of people organize collections on the occasion of personal events (tribute to a loved one, wedding, birthday, sporting challenge such as taking part in a marathon or the Tour de France cycle race,…).

  • Take part in an event

The Centre Léon Bérard organizes or participates in sports events for the benefit of research carried out on its site. Such events bring together thousands of people in pursuit of a shared goal: to push back the disease through advances in research.

  • Bequests, donations and life insurance

Bequeathing all or part of your estate enables you to pass on to future generations the best possible hope of triumphing over cancer. Donations and life insurance policies are also an effective way to take action by associating your name with the fight against cancer.

  • Tax on Real Estate Wealth (IFI)

Making a donation to the Centre Léon Bérard within the context of the Tax on Real Estate Wealth allows you to arrange your taxation for the benefit of a medical and scientific strategy focused on excellence and innovation for the benefit of the patient. This is a powerful gesture of generosity.

  • Philanthropy

Becoming a philanthropist means linking your company with the fight against cancer and supporting innovation in your region. This is a generous move that enables you to give more substantial resources to the research projects developed at the Centre Léon Bérard in Lyon.

Why should you support us?

  • Cancer: the leading cause of death in France

Cancer is the leading cause of death in France. Every year, more than 400 000 new cases are diagnosed and nearly 150 000 people die of cancer. It is estimated that one French citizen in three will be affected by the disease in the course of his or her life. Thanks to advances in research, we now cure more than half of cancer patients, against one in three 30 years ago. In this fight, research is our best hope of finding effective and durable solutions for vanquishing this disease.

  • Innovation in oncology and expertise in Lyon

Supporting the Centre Léon Bérard means supporting the work of close to 500 researchers who dedicate their efforts every day to the fight against cancer. Bringing together patients, doctors and researchers on the same site addresses a key ambition of our institute: shortening the time needed between discoveries in the laboratory and their real-life application for the benefit of patients. Recognized internationally, the research carried out on the Centre Léon Bérard site is at the cutting edge of excellence and innovation.

  • Tax deductibility

As the Centre Léon Bérard is recognized as being of public benefit, donations made to it are eligible for a tax deduction. If you are subject to income tax, you can deduct 66% of the amount of your donations up to a maximum of 20% of your taxable income. For example, a donation of €50 would cost €17 after tax deduction. If you are subject to corporate income tax, 60% of the amount of your donation can be deducted up to 0.5% of turnover.

  • Rigor and transparency

In supporting the Centre Léon Bérard, you can be assured that your donations and bequests will be properly used. Our accounts are certified each year by an auditor and our activity reports can be consulted at any time on our website or are available on request. The CLB also undertakes to keep you regularly informed about the use of your donations and the various projects carried out with your help.

What are your donations used for?

  • 15% of the research budget

Each year, donations made to the Centre Léon Bérard represent around 15% of the budget allocated to research on the whole of our site. This is essential financial support that enables our teams to go further and faster in the battle against cancer and to be at the cutting edge of innovation. Against the background of continual cuts in public funding for research, this generosity from the general public is fundamental to our ability to continue our fight, to find new treatments and continuously to improve the care we give to the patients at our hospital.

  • Construction and equipment of research buildings

Your donations provide financing to construct and equip our research buildings. Thanks to our donors’ generosity, we have recently been able to open two of the three unfinished floors of our newest research building, Cheney B. Opened in 2014, this seven-floor building had not been completed due to a lack of funding. With the help of an unprecedented fund-raising campaign, 3 million euros were collected and used for fitting out the building. In 2016 and 2017, two floors were opened one after the other, ready to provide facilities to new research teams. Work is in progress to finish fitting out the last floor.

  • Acquisition of high-tech equipment

Thanks to your support, the Centre Léon Bérard is able to obtain state-of-the-art high-tech research equipment. Recently, DNA sequencers costing several hundreds of thousands of euros arrived to complete the facilities of the research laboratories. They enable researchers to read the DNA of the tumors of adult and child patients, in order to detect any anomalies that can explain why their cancer developed. With the help of this technology, doctors can then personalize treatments in line with the genetic profile of each patient’s tumor.

  • Funding research posts

With your donations, the Centre Léon Bérard funds around 25 posts each year for researchers who join the teams on its site. These are often post-docs who, once they have obtained their PhDs, have to gain experience before becoming eligible for tenure. By giving these young researchers financial support, usually for a period of three years, the Centre Léon Bérard brings additional human resources to teams that need reinforcement, ensures that there is a new generation of researchers, and gives research the resources to go further and faster in the fight against cancer.

  • Patient comfort

Every year, part of the sum obtained from donations is dedicated to the comfort of patients – adults and children – who are being treated on the Centre Léon Bérard site. This support enables our institute to offer patients, without charge, the services of a socio-esthetician and a chiropodist, to organize cultural workshops as part of the ‘Art in the Hospital’ program (music, photography, fashion, etc.), or to give Christmas presents to children and young people in hospital. In 2018, donations also made it possible to create, within the hospital, the ‘Pyramid Space’ (Espace Pyramide) – a 300 m² space that is unique in France, used for appropriate physical exercise for the adolescents, young adults and adults with cancer.
