Cancer research is at the heart of the Centre Léon Bérard

In the last 20 years, the Centre Léon Bérard strongly developed its activities on translational and basic research by structuring several teams affiliated with the National Institute of Health and Medical Research (Inserm), the National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) and the University Claude Bernard Lyon 1, by extending the size of laboratories (more than 15000 m² dedicated to research) and the technologic potential (Biological Resource Centre, L3 Laboratory, cytometry and cell sorting platform…)
The main objective is to develop an interdisciplinary research of excellence against cancer, in association with the care activities of the Centre Léon Bérard and institutional and private partners. The foundations of this development lay in the medical and scientific project. The CLB aims to reinforce the continuum care-research by facilitating translational research to help and speed-up its access to patients for diagnoses and therapies.

Cancer research at the Centre Léon Bérard is outlined in 3 large units:

The Cancer Research Centre of Lyon (CRCL) is a centre of Excellence in research on cancer biology affiliated with the national health and research bodies (Inserm and CNRS), the University Claude Bernard Lyon 1, the Léon Bérard Comprehensive Cancer Centre (CLB) and with Lyon University Hospitals (HCL) as clinical partners. Managed by Alain Puisieux, the CRCL aims at increasing the international visibility and attractiveness of the research hub, to facilitate the transfer of knowledge from fundamental cancer research to clinical applications in oncology, and to develop teaching and training.

The CRCL is composed of 20 research teams, representing 400 persons including 110 researchers and researcher-teachers and structured in three departments:

Translational and innovation research (Director: Patrick Mehlen): it gathers translational research platforms developed at the CLB in molecular diagnosis (translational research laboratory), in innovative therapies (Innovation in Immune Monitoring and Immunotherapy platform, experimental surgery Institute, Centre for research into the acquisition and processing of images for healthcare – CREATIS) and in environmental risk research, in health economics and in social sciences (cancer and environment department);

Clinical research:  under the management of David Pérol the Clinical Research department has been certified ISO 9001 since 2013.Rich of 30 year-experience, its activity lays on a strong interaction between medical units and research units. Over the years, the clinical research has strongly structured and professionalized with 70 persons dedicated to this activity on site so far.

Figures of research at the Centre Léon Bérard in 2016

500 persons dedicated to research programs on cancer

1790 patients included in clinical trials

400 scientific publications

The Centre Léon Bérard has thus been certified by the National Cancer Institute (INCa) as an oncology Early Clinical Trial Centre (CLIP2) and Data Proceeding Centre (CTD) on oncology clinical trials. The Centre Léon Bérard has been certified as well by the French Minister for Health as anOncology Clinical Research Centre (CRC) within the Health Coordination Group (GCS) Lyon University Oncology.

The Centre Léon Bérard became also, through its research laboratories, a privileged site for incubation of innovating companies (ex: ERYtech Pharma, NETRIS Pharma, Drive Implants). Moreover, numerous research teams of the CLB obtained grants from the Canceropôle CLARA ‘proof of concept’ to develop projects with a strong potential of dissemination in partnership with industrials of the Rhône-Alpes Region.

As an evidence of the excellence of the works led by the Centre Léon Bérard in 2011, the research teams of the CLB were took on in several national calls for proposals.

The project of Integrated cancer Research Site (SIRIC) named (LYric), supported by the Health Cooperation group (GCS) Lyon University Oncology gathering the Centre Léon Bérard and the HCL -  accredited in June 2011 by the INCa .

Besides, several teams are integrated to the LabEx DEVweCAN.

Finally, research at the CLB receives the support of a scientific board, an authority task force regarding scientific politics. This board works on development perspectives in the field of research and assesses each year research projects developed at the CLB.
