Innovative treatments in the centre Léon Bérard

Therapeutic targets at the oncology department of the CLB

Unlike chemotherapy which inhibits rapid cell division, these new forms of treatment act against specific molecular targets (receptors, genes or proteins). The CLB is one of the few French hospitals to combine on a single site both a molecular biology platform, for molecular diagnosis, and specialized medical oncologists who prescribe these therapies. ,

Molecular biology can indeed identify tumour markers or molecular targets, to prescribe targeted therapy.

Radiology department

This department has cutting-edge equipment and offers interventional radiology:
• use of imaging techniques to guide local tumour treatments (cryotherapy, radiofrequency and focused ultrasound).

Surgery department

 Complex and referral surgery
• Intra-peritoneal chemotherapy delivers chemotherapy directly into the peritoneal cavity
•  High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) for less invasive treatment of liver metastases.

The Radiotherapy department

This unit possesses a unique equipment and offers complex techniques:
• The Cyberknife®, a next-generation robotic radiosurgery system
• Tomotherapy

• Respiratory gating radiation therapy

• Extracranial stereotactic radiation therapy
• Conformal radiation therapy and Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT)
• Brachytherapy

The CLB and the Intrabeam®

The CLB offers also an Intrabeam® device to the management of breast cancers by intraoperative radiation therapy.

This treatment performed simultaneously by surgeons and radiotherapists is dedicated to menopausal women with good histological prognostic criteria. The radiation treatment performed during the surgery can reduce, even totally drop, radiation therapies which can be prescribed for the treatment of these cancers.
